kimmyles-sitting-340x240.jpg Myles of beauty. Myles of imagination. Myles of style. Kim Myles.

Self-describing her design style as: Global Urban Chic, this one time hairdresser, born in Queens, New York is now HGTV's brightest design star on the rise. After winning "Design Star" season two, she now has her own interior design and DIY show, "Myles of Style". If you've seen the show you know of Kim's fearless designs that are all about personal expression. If you haven't seen the show then you are surely missing out.

Club DD was able to snag Six Questions with Kim in between her busy studio and family life and we were very appreciative for her time.

Six Questions

1. Club DD: Let's start off with a tough question: Who does your hair? It's so lovely!

KM: Thank you -- I guess my hairdressing past has officially paid off!! Truthfully, the 'fro does what it pleases 99% of the time, but I do give myself a haircut every 2 months (these curls are like topiary: I shape the silhouette, and I'm good to go!). I still have my color done at Salon Institute in NYC by my ex-boss, Kristen Traina. We try to imitate the effects of sun and surf, so we tip my curls with gold, and cover the gray!

2. Club DD: At what point in your life did you decide that becoming an interior designer was the right path for you?

KM: Well, I've always been fascinated by the visual arts, and experimenting with my own space has been a passionate hobby of mine since I was a pre-teen. Creating beautiful spaces, lighting, art, etc. has been the goal of my artistic life for at least 10 years, but it was the gift of HGTV and "Myles of Style" that really allowed me to pursue my obsession on a much bigger scale.

3. Club DD: When I am not on the set, I am:

KM: If I'm not working, then I'm hanging with my husband, or reading on my deck. (I know it may not sound particularly exciting, but I swear to you, it's heaven!) I've never been afraid of hard work or long hours, but hosting my own complete creative process for TV each week gives new meaning and intensity to both. When I'm 'off', I am totally off...almost like a vegetable! mylesdesign1.jpg

4. Club DD: What tips/suggestions do you have for other young women looking to become successful designers? It is a difficult field to succeed in?

KM: My best advice would be to 'follow your bliss'. When you're passionate about something (in our case, design), that passion will guide you through to your goals. I also think that you must believe totally in your own aesthetic vision, and be unflinching in it's execution. My style is firmly 'anti-catalog' with it's quirky combos and vivid colors, and I think that my willingness to celebrate that, versus trying to fit into someone else's mold has played a huge part in my success thus far.

5. Club DD: My favorite summer cocktail is:

KM: A vodka gimlet! I dislike overly sweet cocktails, and this one (when real lime juice is used) is crisp, refreshing, and totally delicious.

6. Club DD: I am most inspired by:

KM: Life, in all of it's splendor. The colors of nature, the architecture of big cities, runway fashions, the scent of fresh blooms, my beautiful family....it all ends up in my mix!

I do love your hair!! It fits you perfectly...
I think your style is very unique. I like what you did with the orange in the photo above (the wall color). I'm looking forward to incorporating orange into my space because of it even though I was reluctant to do so before.
