Model. Actress. Mother. Humanitarian.
Although not yet mainstream, Shelly Rio is on her grind putting together a solid portfolio that will one day change all that.
You've seen her on MTV's Wild 'N Out, Sleeper Cell, Sex and the City and the Jamie Kennedy Experiment. You've seen her in ads for Lugz, Karl Kani, Bacardi and Dasani. And if you are a gentleman, we KNOW you have seen her on the cover of King Magazine, Blackmen Magazine and yes, in the Lil Wayne "Lollipop" music video.
That's only the beginning. Ms. Rio's goal is to not only establish herself as a top model but also, on a more selfless and inspirational level, set up her own non-profit organization for foster kids, group home kids and single moms to help them with funding when they turn 18.
Ms. Rio has faced great adversity in her life. And with God's blessing and a truly positive attitude she has pushed on. But although she has overcome life's emotional obstacles, she now faces industry obstacles. The most common: being labeled and viewed as another "video hoe".
But that won't stop Ms. Rio. She understands the nature of the game. If life were Chess, you could say she was positioning her pieces, sacrificing the pawns, lulling her opponent into a false sense of security and then CHECKMATE.
Pink Diamond Management made this interview possible. Read on as we chatted with Shelly about life, the business and FUN!
Enjoy!
Six Questions
1. Club DD: Your journey to the top hasn't been as smooth as others. What keeps you positive and motivated through the tough times?
Shelly: God, he keeps me motivated through all my tough times in the industry and outside of the industry.
2. Club DD: When you aren't scorching magazine covers, what do you enjoy doing?
Shelly: Hanging out with my kids and hubby and doing fun day trips. I'm like a big kid, so when ever I want to do something silly or go somewhere for kids, I say "Oh, my son wanted to. I also love watching anything reality, thank God for TiVo.
Club DD: So that WAS you going buck-wild at Sesame Place! (Just kidding)
3. Club DD: Are there any aspiring models right now that you'd like to see blow up?
Shelly: I'm not sure if I would say she's an aspiring model, but I would love to see Chanta Patton blow up. "She's most known from Akon's video "Dangerous".
Club DD: Yes, she's very lovely. We've been seeing her quite a bit lately. We'll use you as a name drop when we go to get an interview with her.
4. Club DD: Not wanting to be type-casted or viewed as a "video hoe" where do you see yourself ultimately?
Shelly: Unfortunately, I'm already viewed as that, but I know I have a bigger calling in life and gracing the mainstream magazines, ad campaigns, and billboards is where I see myself in the future. And also to have a solid successful foundation for foster kids, and to open up a group home.
Club DD: Wow. You go girl!
5. Club DD: Your most embarrassing moment on a photo shoot was:
Shelly: I would have to say when I was doing a shoot in my underwear outside and people kept stopping to look.
Finally a security guard came over and said people were complaining of a naked girl outside taking pictures. I was mortified, but not naked.
6. Club DD: If you were a flavor of ice cream which would it be?
Shelly: De leche. It’s smooth, creamy, and tastes good. It’s my favorite; it’s like my skin, lol.
Club DD: Haagen-Daz take note: De Leche will now be known as Shelly Leche. We'll take ours with a cherry on top!
